 A bit frustrating August 29, 2010

I purchased this game for my 5-year-old son. While he does enjoys playing the game he finds it frustrating. The game begins with oral instructions that allow a child to follow what the game entails. The frustrating part is that some directions are oral and then others require an adult to read. One example, the commentator says "Wow, you have so much to do!" Then a pop-up shows the To Do list but it must be read. I wish that the makers of this game realized that the audience for this game would have really enjoyed the experience more if all the directions and characters' comments were oral.

I was looking for a game for my two boys (ages 4 and 6) to play on the Wii that did not involve some sort of battle defeating monsters, etc. This game fits the bill. The premise is that you are there to help out the town get ready for a big celebration. So you go on missions for the townsfolk to find the things that they need for the party. For example you might have to go to the gardens to bring back fresh berries to bake pies at the bakery. You keep completing these errands and you earn points that can be cashed in for things like buying new wardrobe pieces for your character.
My 6 year old enjoys this game quite a bit. Most of the gameplay instructions that appear on the screen in text form are also spoken by the game for non-readers. However, one drawback is that when they go to talk to the townsfolk to find out their errands, those conversations are NOT spoken. So my son in Kindergarten cannot read all of the conversations and sometimes I end up sitting nearby to help him read them. Although if I am busy, he can figure out what he needs to do without me because the game helps them find their way on these errands by showing an arrow with the direction to go through town. This game does not hold the 4 year old's attention for as long, he at times gets frustrated if I or his brother am not there to help him. So I think he is a little too young for it.
I think overall it is a good game. The biggest disappointment I had was that I thought it was a 2 player game, but only certain portions of the game can be played in two-player mode. And those portions can only be played once they have unlocked those areas of gameplay by completing certain missions. So in other words, my two kids can't play this together until they get further through the game. They seem to be happy enough taking turns and watching each other play the game though.
So overall, nice game concept and kid friendly game (i.e. no violence). It would be nice if the conversations with the townsfolk were spoken by the game, but the kids figure it out anyways. I paid $20 for this and am perfectly happy with it for the price.
